The Student Experience
Fei Tian provides students with a safe and healthy community in which to grow.
For students living on campus, advisers and the Office of Student Affairs are some of the resources that provide students with support and activities that enrich their experience. Additionally, in each dorm, one of the older students is selected to be a residential monitor.
Students who commute to campus everyday also engage with the community on campus. They join the same afterschool activities and meet with other students in campus common areas such as the library.
Dormitories at Fei Tian are of various sizes, housing from four to forty students. Every dormitory has at least one supervisor. Students generally have one roommate. The grade levels are purposely mixed so that older students can naturally help younger students in adjusting to life at Fei Tian and can help enforce rules regarding housekeeping, study times, and lights-out.
Many students view the dormitory experience as one of the most valuable aspects of their time at Fei Tian. Whether it’s perfecting a dance movement, studying for a history examination, or making a late night snack, the camaraderie of the dormitories is something that students of all different backgrounds tend to learn from and cherish.
The supervisors are the primary adults overseeing the students living in their dormitories. Supervisors live within the dormitory buildings and are the primary liaison with parents and advisers in helping and supporting the students in their dorms. The supervisors also are responsible for maintaining safe conditions, order, a good study climate and observance of school rules. The supervisors grant sick leave and room visiting permission. Supervisors are assisted by older students who serve as residential monitors.
These monitors play a crucial role in communicating with individual students and school authorities and organizing basic housekeeping. The monitors are there to observe whether students are doing well in their day-to-day lives, help younger students adjust to life away from their parents, and ensure that students are respecting dormitory rules and policies.
Advisers connect with each student and guide them through the many personal and academic choices they must make during the school year. Advisers foster a close relationship with students and mentor on a one-on-one basis. They can help students maintain a healthy balance in terms of academic, artistic, and moral training.
Advisers of commuting students serve as the primary faculty contact between these students and their parents or guardians. Advisers of students living on campus work with the supervisor, sharing information about students and their programs so that the supervisor, the primary faculty contact for on-campus students and their parents/guardians, can communicate between these parties.
Students who are new to Fei Tian are advised by their supervisor as they may need more guidance in their transition.
Day students at Fei Tian can also become fully involved members of the community by participating in afterschool activities. Students put in many hours together in dance, music, study, and meditation groups and this helps forge them into one body. Although commuting does have a natural disconnecting effect, this can be easily overcome through the encouragement of Fei Tian staff and active participation in afterschool groups.
The school cafeteria provides three healthy meals a day. While students may choose from different options for a meal plan, all students are required to participate in the lunch service. Snacks will also be available for purchase.
